Christian Coalition Against DV: Faith Voices in Action

Victims and Survivors of Domestic Violence

You are not alone. If you are experiencing abuse—or have experienced it in the past—your life, safety, and well-being are a matter of concern. Domestic violence can take many forms, including physical, emotional, verbal, financial, sexual, and spiritual abuse. Abuse is never your fault, and it is never justified—no matter what you have heard, responding violently is not justified.

**God’s Heart for You**

God does not call you to remain in toxic, abusive relationships. Scripture affirms your worth, your right to safety, and God’s desire for your protection from abuse.

“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18

**What You Deserve**

You deserve:

- To be safe

- To be believed

- To be treated with dignity and respect

- To make your own decisions at your own pace

- Support without judgment, pressure, or shame

You do not have to choose between your faith and your safety. If you speak to your pastor or faith leader and are told to return to the abuse, do not follow this advice. Some faith leaders may not be equipped and may not have enough understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence and may unintentionally offer advice that is not safe for you to follow.

**Support Is Available**

The Christian Coalition Against Domestic Violence exists to walk alongside survivors of domestic violence with compassion, confidentiality, and faith-based support. We can help connect you to:

- Domestic violence advocates

- Safety planning support

- Counseling and emotional support

- Faith-based resources, including finding you a church that does not tolerate abuse.

- Community and referral services

We respect your story and your choices. You are the expert of your own life.

**You Are Not to Blame**

Abuse is about power and control—not love, conflict, or failure. Nothing you did caused the abuse, and nothing you do can fix someone else’s harmful behavior.

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres." - 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
