Transforming Lives with Christian Coalition Against DV: Faith Voices

Faith Leaders

Faith leaders play a critical role in shaping how survivors of domestic violence are seen, supported, and protected within the church and community. As trusted voices, pastors, ministers, and ministry leaders have the opportunity—and responsibility—to reflect God’s heart for justice, safety, and restoration. About 70% of victims turn to their faith leaders for guidance and support, making it an opportunity not to be taken lightly.

Our Call as Faith Leaders

Domestic violence is not a private matter or a marital conflict—it is an abuse of power that causes deep physical, emotional, spiritual, and psychological harm. The sad reality is that these conflicts cause lifelong issues that often require counseling.

Scripture is clear: God does not tolerate oppression, violence, or misuse of authority in any form.

“The Lord examines the righteous, but the wicked, those who love violence, He hates with a passion.” – Psalm 11:5

Faith leaders are called to:

- Protect the vulnerable

- Speak truth with clarity and courage

- Create churches that are safe, accountable, and healing-centered

How Faith Leaders Can Help

1. Create Safe and Supportive Church Spaces

Churches should implement church safety policies that ensure they are places where survivors are believed, supported, and never blamed. This includes clear policies, confidentiality, and referral pathways to domestic violence resources and professional support.

2. Teach Scripture Responsibly

Misused theology can trap survivors in abusive situations. Faith leaders are encouraged to teach biblical principles that uphold dignity, mutual respect, and God’s design for love—not control or harm. Scripture is not meant to be used as a weapon.

3. Respond with Wisdom and Compassion

When abuse is disclosed:

- Listen without judgment - Don't input your personal thoughts, just listen first.

- Prioritize safety over reconciliation - Don't tell the victim to just go back home to an abuser that can potentially harm them.

- Avoid pressuring survivors to forgive or return to danger - Reach out to local agencies and consult with an advocate against Domestic Violence to find out how you can assist.

- Connect them with trained advocates and local resources - Showing support can mean placing a call with the victim and letting them know you are there to help.

4. Address Abuse from the Pulpit

Silence enables harm. Speaking openly about domestic violence helps reduce stigma, educates congregations, signals to survivors that they are not alone, and most importantly, lets them know the faith community stands against violence.

5. Partner with Advocates and Professionals

Faith leaders are not expected to be counselors or investigators. Collaboration with domestic violence advocates, counselors, and legal professionals ensures survivors receive holistic and appropriate care. The R.I.S.E Resource Center is a faith-based agency based in Durham, NC, assisting victims and survivors of Domestic Violence; you can contact them for locations in your area. www.iamrise.org - (919) 283-1930
